Cooking With Kids Series

Hot Buttered Pretzels Cooking is a life skill everyone should have. If you know how to create one or two simple meals, you won't starve. Once you learn how to create those one or two meals, you have opened the door to your imagination, your creativity, and hopefully your desire to learn how to create more delicious meals. When I became a mom of two boys, I wondered about having boys and cooking. Is this something I should do? Would they be interested in cooking? I love to cook. If I am not writing, I am in my kitchen whipping up way to much food for anyone to eat. I loved cooking for my boys, I still do, but I also wanted them to appreciate how the food got to their plate. I believe in teaching by example, and the best example I knew how to teach them about where there food came from and how it looks and tastes the way it does, is to get them in the kitchen and share my love of cooking with them. Meet Nicky!

As an author, I am constantly asked, "Who is Nicky?" Everyone wants to know if Nicky is a real person or someone I dreamed up. Well, Nicky is as real as he can be. He lives in all of us. Well, at least he lives in me. After all, I'm the one writing about him. But in all honesty, raising my two boys William and Daniel, they were the inspiration for Nicky. Every Nicky story was inspired by real-life events. The second question I get all the time is "Where did the name Nicky come from?" That one is easy. When I was pregnant with my first child, I told my husband I love the name Nicholas and if we have a boy I wanted to name him Nicholas. My husband flat out refused. He hates that name. So we decided to name him William. I tried again when I found out I have having another boy, but still, I lost that battle. I won the war in the end though, because I got my Nicky after all. Following Directions: Let's Make It A Game!

One of the biggest learning hurdles for children to master is learning how to follow directions. For parents, it can be a trying time. Trust me. I know how trying those early years can be, but if you take a deep breath, acknowledge that all children learn at a different pace, and in different ways, learning can be fun and maybe just little less stressful. At what age do children learn how to follow directions? That all depends on the child. Read your child's ques. Take your time, go at your child's pace. Break it down. Right from the starting gate, you can ask your child, simple requests. Ask them, "Can I have the spoon?" and point to the spoon. Your child might not even know what you are asking. Slowly hold the spoon in their hand. You are not taking the spoon away, but you are showing them what the spoon is. Talking to them about it. This is teaching them speech, identifying items, and visual cues. Learning to follow directions takes time. Start small, and don'
